Killian ( President of FISU) said, "It is with great honor and pleasure that I take this opportunity to welcome you and the more than 6,000 athletes, coaches, and administrators from 165 countries that have gathered here tonight in this wonderful city of Beijing, China for the opening of the largest Summer Universiade in the history of FISU. I first came to Beijing some four years ago at the request of our late President, Dr. Primo Nebiolo, to explore the possibility with the local governmental authorities of hosting a Summer Universiade. Following our initial visit, it wasn't long after that the city of Beijing notified us of its desire to host the 2001 Summer Universiade. The rest is history..."

Zhou Shiming won the silver medal in the light flyweight division at the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Chicago ( USA ).

Qiao Hong won a gold medal for China in the women's table tennis team event and a bronze medal in the singles at the Atlanta Olympiad in 1996.

China won the gold medal in water polo at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok ( Thailand ).

Du Li is an Olympic shooter from Zibo ( Shandong province). She finished first in the air rifle competition in Athens'2004 and first in the same event at the 2006 Summer Asian Games in Doha (Qatar).

Liu Xiang won the gold medal in the 110m hurdles at the 2007 IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Osaka (Japan). The gold medal is one of more than 200 international medals in his career.

Lang Ping (volleyball player) was voted China's sportspeople of the year for 1981-82. Under her leadership, the People's Republic of China won three world champions and an Olympic title. In the 2000s, she won a place in the International Volleyball Federation Hall of Fame.

China finished in ninth place at the 1990 FIBA Basketball Women's World Cup in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Shangai will host the 2011 FINA World Championship.

Yao Ming is one of the pioneers of basketball players in the People's Republic of China. He put China on the map when was one of the most valuable players in the NBA. For this reason, he was the flag bearer of the Chinese Olympic team at the 2004 Athens. Yao was born on September 12, 1980 in Shangai.
